Knowledge Society and Social Inclusion Unit

The Knowledge Society and Social Inclusion Unit carries out action-research activities aimed at studying and experimenting ICT-enabled learning solutions as a means to support and promote learning processes of disadvantaged social groups and training paths of trainers.

In particular, the following projects deserve special attention:

  • Centre4 (2003-2005) project co-funded by DG Education and Culture in the framework of the Leonardo da Vinci Programme, aims at developing a distance learning system for trainers working with young prison inmates.
  • HERO – Health Promotion and Educational Support for the Rehabilitation of Offenders (2001-2004), project co-funded by DG Information Society in the framework of the IST Programme, developed an elearning system addressing learning needs of prison inmates and ex prison inmates.
  • S2Net – Social and Sectorbased E-learning enhanced by Professional Open and Distance Learning Networks (2002-2004), project co-funded by DG Education and Culture in the framework of the Leonardo da Vinci Programme, aims at analysing the role of e-learning for the training of socially excluded groups in order to develop guidelines and to identify good practices with the objective of supporting training practitioners and those in charge of training in the process of effectively integrating e-learning within the existing and available training and learning opportunities.   • Seahorse (1998-2000), project co-funded by the European Commission in the framework of the 4th Framework Programme, developed an online and interactive information system aimed at providing users (people affected by HIV/AIDS) with updated and personalised information and data sets concerning health, prevention and treatment-related issues.
  • Actio (1997-1998), project co-funded by the European Commission in the framework of the Integra programme, developed dedicated training paths for ex drug addicts supporting their resettlement process
  • Rail (1998-2001), project co-funded by the European Commission in the framework of the Horizon programme, developed a training programme to support the social and economic reintegration of ex drug addicts.
  • Archimede (1998-2001), project co-funded by the European Commission DG XXII in the framework of the Leonardo da Vinci programme, developed training paths to support the development of organisational skills of individuals at risk of social exclusion, identifying the main dynamics and critical areas of the labour market.
